Subscription services are popping up everywhere, in pretty much all industries. We can get almost anything “as-a-service”. From make-up and house plants to TV and transport. The shift to an as-a-service model benefits business and consumers (though arguably not workers) and is radically transforming traditional industries. But where did it come from?

It may seem like a new phenomenon tied to the digital age, but the concept was actually born more than fifty years ago. Check out this animation that explains how one of the earliest as-a-service business models revolutionized the airline industry and led the way for likes of Uber and Spotify.
