Program Overview

No matter where we are in our career journey, good leadership is something we have to practice every day. It doesn’t just come about naturally. Instead, good leadership comes from mining our experiences, understanding our shortcomings, and continuously learning.

At Nomadic, we think that leadership—like the human body—is built from a series of interconnected muscles that we need to exercise in order to keep in shape. In this Program, we’ll examine some of the most fundamental muscles of leadership: foresight, voice, resilience, and reflection. Strength to Lead explores the foundational principles of good leadership and offers practical tips to give leaders at all levels the insight, motivation, and action they need to lead ambitious, transformative change within their organization.

Key Questions

How does foresight help us be better leaders?

What can we do to develop and use our voice as leaders for the good of our teams and organizations?

How can we create cultures of reflection and accountability?

Field Manuals

The Strength to Lead Program is made up of 5 Field Manuals (our version of an online module). Each one contains a variety of content and social exercises culminating in a mini-project, reflection, or debate. Each Field Manual will take you between 30-45 minutes to complete, but you can jump on and off at your own pace, as often as you’d like. The deeper learning happens in the discussions with your fellow learners, so be sure to check in on the conversations regularly.

  • Leadership as a Muscle

No one is born a leader. It’s something all of us have to work on continuously. In this way, leadership is more like exercise than anything else. Just like building muscle at the gym, we can strengthen our leadership skills by using them every day. This Field Manual explores this mindset shift and how it changes our fundamental approach to leadership development.

  • Foresight

Developing foresight is about honing our ability to understand the present and use good data to prepare for what may come. That means asking the right questions, discerning which information matters, and staying aware of what’s going on around us. This Field Manual explains why foresight is critical to good leadership and how we can improve our own.

  • Voice

Leaders with a strong, clear voice say what needs to be said, even if it's uncomfortable. However, they do it with honesty and compassion. Voice is about the entire practice of communication, the connection between speech and action, when and why to speak up, and when it’s best for us to just listen. This Field Manual is all about why finding our voice is an essential step in our leadership journey.

  • Resilience

Resilience is key to great leadership, but it isn’t built by simply avoiding crises or challenging situations. Instead, we gain resilience when we overcome and recover from great hardship despite the obstacles in our way. This Field Manual is all about the role of resilience in strong leadership and why it’s not something any of us can achieve alone.

  • Reflection

Arguably the most important muscle of leadership is the ability to think about our own behavior and actions as a leader—and consider how and where we can grow. Reflection means understanding our actions, their consequences, and how this understanding can help us continuously grow as leaders. This Field Manual explores the process of creating space to reflect on and learn from our own experiences.
